Bangor MedCu

Bangor MedCu is the emergency medical service that serves the Bangor area and the University of Maine at Orono, appearing at two pivotal moments in the novel to underscore the characters' helplessness before death. Its first and most consequential appearance occurs on Louis Creed's first day as director of the Student Medical Center, when the dying student Victor Pascow is brought in after being struck by a car. Louis immediately orders the nurse Joan Charlton to call Bangor MedCu, but the infirmary's own ambulance is out of service with a broken radiator, and the delay forces Louis to rely on Campus Security for transport. The ambulance from Bangor MedCu never arrives in time for Pascow; he dies on the infirmary floor before any vehicle can reach him, and his body is later flown back to his family in New Jersey. The second appearance comes months later, on Halloween night, when Norma Crandall suffers a heart attack in her kitchen. Louis, who is present because he accompanied his daughter Ellie on her trick-or-treating, administers CPR and sends Jud Crandall to have Rachel call Bangor MedCu. The ambulance arrives twenty minutes later and transports Norma to the hospital, where she survives. The contrast between the two calls—one too late, one just in time—reinforces the novel's meditation on the randomness of death and the narrow margin between life and loss. Bangor MedCu itself is never personified or described in detail; it functions as a narrative device that marks the boundary between medical intervention and the irreversible, a threshold that Louis Creed will ultimately cross on his own terms when he chooses the Micmac burying ground over any hospital for his son's body.
